Castle Mountain

Cultivate Joy

Approaching Castle Mountain from the Bow Valley Parkway may not be the quickest way to see the iconic peak, but it’s a favourite and offers a breathtaking perspective. During the warmer months, the "Bow Valley Parkway Car-Free Zone" initiative allows visitors to cycle from Banff to Johnston Canyon along the closed road. This initiative offers a safer and more enjoyable experience for cyclists and pedestrians, allowing them to appreciate Banff National Park's natural beauty at a slower pace. And just so you understand the pure bliss of this experience, it’s so highly rated and fantastic that it keeps the locals coming back several times a year.

I created this drawing to capture the feeling of allowing yourself to be fully absorbed in the simple joy of a moment, such as cycling along an open road on a summer’s day. The warmth of the sun on your skin, the wind in your hair, the atmosphere so light-hearted it’s pure happiness. And just when you think it can't get any better, you come upon this incredible view of Castle Mountain rising up before you - the cherry on top of the perfect day.

Experiencing this journey to Castle Mountain taught me that joy can be cultivated. It can be found in the simplest element and has the power to become unexpected moments that dazzle you. My hope is that my drawing of Castle Mountain will encourage you to be present, explore the alternative path, and embrace joy in the small things as you journey through life.

‘Castle Mountain’ is the fourth drawing in my “Finding myself in the Canadian Rockies” collection. To continue following along on my journey, check out ‘Banff Springs’ next.
